☆ Formula One set to change sprint format for 2024

The governing FIA said on Friday its Sporting Advisory Committee would present a final proposal to the F1 Commission in January. "The Commission gave overall support for an update to the sprint format for 2024 to further rationalise the weekend by separating Sprint activities from those for the Grand Prix," the FIA said in a statement. Six of this year's 22 rounds were sprint weekends, including the Qatar Grand Prix in which Red Bull's Max Verstappen clinched his third world title on a Saturday. The current format has qualifying for the grand prix on Friday with sprint qualifying and standalone race filling Saturday's schedule. Points could be awarded more widely for the sprint race, with a possible reverse grid element also under consideration.

Rome and Milan, Italy CNN —A storm that brought heavy rain and violent winds to Northern Italy overnight and early Tuesday sent rapid floods through central Milan and caused Lake Como to breach its banks. The Seveso, a river that runs through the municipalities of Como, Monza e Brianza and Milan, also broke its banks, according to Italy’s civil protection agency. The city’s safety councilor, Marco Granelli, said the winds felled trees, tore down scaffolding and ripped off roof tiles. Two women at a flooded intersection in Milan after a violent storm hit the city on October 31, 2023. Strong winds blowing towards the north in the Adriatic Sea pushed water up into the city.

However, after the game Mourinho said he “didn’t know why” he was shown a red card. “I only made a gesture to the bench, not a single word,” Mourinho said, per Reuters. In stoppage time, Mourinho could be seen mimicking someone crying in a gesture made in the direction of the Monza bench. The Roma manager was sent off three times in Serie A last season.

MONZA, Italy, Sept 1 (Reuters) - Lewis Hamilton has questioned the strength of Max Verstappen's Formula One team mates compared to those the Briton has partnered over the years. The seven times world champion also told Sky Italy that he was "no more impressed" with the Red Bull driver's achievements than he had been when other champions were winning and dominating. "In my personal opinion, Valtteri and all of my team mates have been stronger than the team mates that Max has had. Hamilton was beaten by 2009 world champion Button in 2011, by Rosberg in 2016 when the German took the title and by Russell in 2022. None of Verstappen's team mates have been world champions.

Verstappen won the Italian Grand Prix from seventh on the starting grid last year with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc on pole but finishing second. Red Bull have won every race so far this season, 14 in a row including the 2022 finale in Abu Dhabi, and are again favourites at Monza's fast layout. Since Lewis Hamilton's fifth Italian GP win with Mercedes in 2018 no driver has managed a repeat victory in the former royal park outside Milan. Talk of a 'Monza jinx' may be premature but this is a season where straws are being clutched more desperately.
